Heart Opening Yoga Flow

In this 12 min sequence of yoga postures we’ll access the area of the heart and the Anahata chakra. This includes the chest, upper back, shoulder blades, and shoulders. Often when we’re stressed out or feeling blue, this area closes, compressing the internal organs like the lungs and heart. Through this practice, we’ll relieve some emotional burden, decompress the heart and lungs, and allow the breath and life fill us.

Notes and Modifications:

  • When in Salabasana (min 5.45) relax your buttock and activate your pelvic floor and inner thighs. Try to use those as the mechanism that lifts your body. If you’re still experiencing pressure or discomfort around your lower back, keep your legs on the ground and only focus on lifting the chest.
  • In Ustrasana (min 6.50) it is very important to engage your pelvic floor for guarding the lower back, as well as lowering your shoulders and shoulder blades to maintain long and relaxed neck.
  • In Gomukhasana (min 7.35), if you experience pain to discomfort around your knees, change your seated position to Sukhasana (simple cross-legged position) or Vajrasana (sitting on your heels with the back of the feets on the mat).
